EVO Workshop - Five Days with Emmy Award Winning Filmmakers Stillmotion
The most impactful five days of my career, by far! A five-day filmmakers intensive with the Emmy award winning team at Stillmotion in Portland, Oregon.
As filmmakers we are responsible for so many aspects of a film, but often times don’t have the skills and/or the hands-on experience we need to produce the film that we envision in our head. In 2013 I attended Emmy Award winning Stillmotion’s EVO 5-day intensive workshop and it literally changed my life and the trajecotry of my business.
My theory is this. I can watch a thousand YouTube video tutorials and read every book about filmmaking under the sun, but there is nothing more powerful than hands-on experience. Just really getting your feet wet (more like being thrown into the deep end not knowing how to swim in my case LOL) and getting in there and doing it was hands-down the best training I could ever have.
My good buddy Gwyn filmed behind the scenes and summed up the EVO Experience in this video. Watch for me at 1:12, I am the one wearing a teal scarf the entire time because it was really “cold” in Portland for my thinned out island girl blood. Yes, I grew up in Minnesota, the coldest place on earth, and yes I now think 70 degrees is cold.
My EVO Experience
I attended the June 2013 EVO and it literally was a game-changer for me. Before attending I had a family lifestyle photography business but had never made a video, however, I had always been obsessed with films, documentaries, etc. I called and talked to the Stillmotion staff extensively beforehand to make sure EVO would be a good fit for me since I was not (at the time) a filmmaker. It’s such an expensive investment I wanted to make sure. When I got there and met the other 14 workshop attendees, I soon realized I was the only non-filmmaker and one of three women. Very intimidating to say the least but I am always up for a challenge.
Most of us flew in the night before and got together for dinner/drinks and a meet-and-greet. By the end of the evening all the Stillmotion staff were there and we got to know them. After dinner we took a tour of Stillmotion's new studio space which was under construction.
DAY 1 – CLASSROOM
We learned the basics of storytelling and about Stillmotion’s storytelling methods. We learned all the technical stuff behind how they handle audio, lighting and create treatments, etc.
DAY 2 – CHALLENGES
This day was completely hands-on learning. We were broken up into 3 teams, each team with 5 of us and two leaders (Stillmotion staff), our group was sooooo lucky, our leaders were Patrick (co-founder of Stillmotion) and Jeremy (the audio expert). Patrick and Jeremy were with us 24/7 for the rest of the workshop. The challenges were broken up into three stations, audio, treatment and lighting. Each team had an hour for each station and had to complete a challenge. In the end whoever got the most points received “money” to buy the equipment we were to use to film a promotional film for a local non-profit the next day. This entire day felt like we were on the show “Apprentice”, there was no stopping, not resting.
During the lighting challenge we had a “client” who was acting like a famous person (acted out by a Stillmotion staff) and we had to treat her like she was a real client, so as we were fumbling around to set up our interview lights, she was impatiently waiting in the other room and I had to calm her down and let her know we would be ready in a few moments.
During the treatment challenge, we had to meet with our “client” (a Stillmotion staff) and ask all the pertinent questions to figure out his vision for his film. So while me and one of my team members were meeting with him, the others were googling him and his fake company. All 3 teams submitted their treatment to him and he later chose the winning team based on who got his vision and created the best treatment.
After the challenge we found out who our real clients were going to be for the promo film we would shoot the next day. We literally had 30 minutes to research our client before they showed up at the studio for their meeting with us. We had to have our questions ready and have a legitimate meeting with them to find out their vision for their promo. These were real non-profits that we would film the very next day. During this meeting and while shooting the next day the non-profit had no idea that we were apprentices and assumed we were Stillmotion staff. LOL
After our meeting with the representatives from the non-profit we went to their place of business to scout the location and the rest of the day we created the treatment, the concept, the characters, called and met with potential characters to be in the film, researched some more, we were literally on the phone and meeting with people associated with the company/film all day trying to create the story that would eventually be their film. During this time we literally did not stop to eat or even breathe, it was crazy, non-stop. We brainstormed and created a storyboard. By the end of the night (early morning) we finished our treatment and shot list and call sheet and were ready for the next day which was shooting the promo.
It was then I learned I would assume the Producer role. Others were assigned to Director, DP, grip, etc. Um, the PRODUCER you say? At this point, I didn't have a clue what the position meant and spent the next few hours in my hotel room googling what a producer does.
DAY 3 - FILMING DAY
We were up at the crack of down and headed to the locations. I was the Producer so I was in charge of all the logistics, keeping tabs on our characters, the timing, what the interviewees were wearing, making sure the director and DP and audio person had what they needed, etc. when lunch would arrive (they teased me later because I legitimately told them we don’t have time for lunch, we have to keep filming), filming wrapped around dinner time and headed back to the studio to start editing. We did this late in to the night, we were delirious around 1am and the Stillmotion teams forced us all into cars and vans and took us to play basketball, it was a total blast, they said we all needed a mental break and I couldn’t believe that we sitting there drinking beer at 2am at a random basketball court on a weeknight in Portland. Lol Back at the studio we took turns sleeping and editing because we knew the next day around noon the film needed to be finished.
DAY 4 - PRESENT FILM TO EVO, STILLMOTION AND CLIENT
We were up at the crack of dawn again after about 3 hours of sleep, we had the morning to finish editing, choose our song(s), and do all the finishing touches. We submitted our final product to the team and had 30 minutes to come with a proposal to basically “sell” our film to the other teams and explain to them the concept behind how and why we made the film.
Then we watched each of the teams finished films and we all literally cried and laughed with joy and as it felt like we literally just gave birth to a film. They handed our beers and cupcakes and Stillmotion staff voted on the best film and that team got first dibs on the door prizes. Our team won and I won a Manfratto monopod. Here is the film me and my team created from start to finish in less than 72 hours.
That evening we all headed to a catered dinner at a local bowling alley and ate, drank, played pool, bowled and just had a serious sigh of relief from the last few days that we endured. We invited our client to the festivities and we had the laptop with us so we showed them the film and we all cried again because she LOVED it and we were just so happy to give her an awesome film in literally 48 hours. The festivities continued to a local pub where we hung out late into the night. At one point, somebody was wearing a dinosaur costume in the bar, things got weird and wild real quick. Then 8 of us packed into the worlds smallest uber car, there were people on laps and one person was even in the truck (don't worry it was a hatchback) cruising around town like crazy teenagers (mind you are all in our 30’s/40’s). I am 99% sure I laughed so hard I peed my pants.
Day 5 - The cherry on top of the coolest experiences ever.
I woke up feeling like I had been hit by an 18-wheeler, but I had the biggest grin on my face because I had just survived the EVO experience. My bestie Jennifer picked me up from the hotel and as we headed to the airport we stopped at the studio so I could say goodbye one last time to my new friends/teammates and to thank the Stillmotion peeps for the craziest, longest, most amazing week of my life. Later that afternoon I flew home with the biggest smile on my face, with 30 new best friends in the filmmaking industry and a newfound passion for films.
I walked away from the workshop learning soooo much, but these two things stood out of the most…
Story first – This was drilled into our heads all week, to this day, 2 years later, it’s the FIRST thing I think of when I am starting a new film…what’s the story?
Collaboration is key…Two or more heads is ALWAYS better than one. I LOVED collaborating and working with my team, and we were so lucky to have Patrick, the very mastermind behind Stillmotion as our leader.
This was hands down one of the coolest experiences of my life. I went into the workshop as a photographer thinking maybe video could enhance my photography business and walked away knowing without a shadow of a doubt that I wanted to pursue filmmaking.
To apply to be an attended for EVO, we had to submit a link our Vimeo page and any videos we had made. I didn't have ANY…like I had literally NEVER made a film before attending. So I literally filmed and edited a video that very day, it was a complete hot mess. I will not ever show that film to anyone, LOL.
I walked away from EVO with the confidence and knowledge I needed to pursue film. Since I came back home to Hawaii, I have made over 50 films, I have completely revamped my website to showcase film and photography.
Basically to sum it all up….
$3,500 for EVO + $1.000 plane ticket + $1800 MacBook Pro + 5 days of INSANITY = walking away with a newfound passion and the knowledge to pursue filmmaking….PRICELESS
Every woman deserves to feel beautiful!
Yesterday, I did something really scary and vulnerable. I got IN FRONT of the camera on a Facebook Live video to talk about an upcoming project that has been in my brain and on my heart. All the details and application process will be open this week Friday June 15, but until then I wanted to share a little bit more about the project.
I shared the story of how Mapuana Reed Photography took my photo and through that photo I was able to see for the first time the beauty that others see in me. I walked into her studio a hot mess, and left feeling like a million buck.s. I will forever cherish that image and its framed on my husbands desk and is a daily reminder for me to see myself how others see me. Beautiful.
I truly believe every woman deserves to feel beautiful!
Sometimes our busy lives steal away all of our attention and we don't take any time to take care of ourselves. I know for me, as a mom, a wife, and a business owner, I rarely take time for myself. And its once in a blue moon that I really take the time to pamper myself and get all dolled up and feel beautiful.
I want be celebrate women. To lift them up. To make them feel beautiful by capturing their stories and their beauty through my lens.
God gave me to the gift of an "eye for photography" and a personality that is warm and inviting (or so I've been told) and makes whomever steps in front of my camera want to open open and show me their true self, their soul. I want to ignite that sparkle in women's eyes through portraits and allow their light to shine bright and share their story to inspire others.
I met Anna about a year ago and the second she stepped in front of my camera I snapped this gorgeous photo of her. I love that smurk on her face and the twinkle in her eye. A truly genuine, timeless black and white image of a beautiful women.
EVERY women should have such an image. I will begin to photograph women in a special passion project called the "She Is" Portrait Project in July.
Applications accepted starting Friday, June 15.
Jenna Leigh Weddings | Hawaii Wedding and Engagement Photographer
Mix an uber talented wedding and engagement photographer, a stunning couple, some beautiful mural art in an urban setting...and voila, you have Jenna Leigh Weddings behind the scenes promo film.
When I met Jenna at a photography meetup over two years ago, little did I know that we would immediately become friends who would spend every week "working" together on some project or event....I use the word "work" here loosely because we have too much fun and love our jobs way too much to call it work.
Fast forward two years, and now, not only do we share an office together downtown, but I assist her at most of her weddings and engagement/elopement sessions, (I have been to over 20 of them with her in the last yea!r), we've traveled to Kauai (read about our Kauai adventure here), and Maui, and we always find time to share our love of music as we travel to and from weddings and sessions. Man, do we ever make a great harmonizing team.
I so proud of the photographic art she produces for her clients, but even more happy to now call her my dear friend.
Jenna's passion for her work speaks for itself, she loves what she does and it shows in her photographs. Her couples rave about how they love her romantic style of shooting and how she captures the true romance between them. I have watched her work at over 20 weddings and can tell you first hand this girl LOVES her job and LOVES photographing love.
She is so passionate about wedding photography in fact, that she created the first annual Hi On Life Photography Conference which takes place here in Honolulu March 6-9, 2017 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. This is no ordinary wedding photographer conference, Oh no, Jenna's "go big or go home" motto applies here. She has world renowned, award winning wedding photographers Susan Stripling, Two Mann Studios, Jeremy Chou and many more super talented photographers speaking at the workshop, as well as three sunrise styled shootouts and three sunset styled shootouts, a private luau and an epic dance party to follow. Its shaking up to be a pretty epic three days, so if can skip on over to Oahu within two weeks or you are a wedding photographer in Hawaii and you haven't purchased your tickets, you need to get on it today! Everything Jenna touches turns to gold so I just know this is going to be an amazing conference.
The engagement promo shoot was filmed in the Kaka'ako area of Honolulu. This was such a fun shoot to film. The couple was gorgeous, the model couple looked like they just stepped off of the runway (the bride is Miss Waikiki and .absolutely stunning and the groom looked like a GQ Magazine model). The urban Kaka'ako setting was a perfect place, the juxtaposition between Christina and Morgan's stark black and white wedding attire against the color and vibrant urban backdrop looked amazing. And the PowWow Hawaii artist murals were on point as always and such gorgeous backdrops for their photos.
Typically Jenna's weddings are on the beach or at a more rural venue with a very romantic feel, so this shoot was so fun for me to film as it really shows how when somebody as talented as Jenna get's a camera in her hand, anything is possible.
It doesn't matter where her clients are, she always finds a way to use the landscape and her surroundings to create magical, romantic photographs for her clients.
I always love to watching Jenna work, she just gets "in the zone" and is so passionate about capturing that perfect moment between her couples.

Love Your Story
Awhile back I sat down to have coffee with my friend Kaye Putnam, Brand Strategist and overall cool human being. We met years prior at a RUSHwahine event and became instant friends.
What I thought was just a casual friends-meeting-for-coffee turned out to have a huge impact on my business practices from that moment on. This girl knows her stuff!
Check out her In Demand Brand Podcast (which I listen to religiously FYI) and take advantage of the amazing freebies on her site, Brandality Quiz and Brand Workbook and you will see for yourself how awesome she is.
While chatting, she asked me a poignant question which got me blabbering on and on about how much I love what I do, how much I love my clients, how much I love digging into their story, how much I love the art of filming, and editing and even the dreaded packaging of the end product, which is typically a custom usb, prints, and some other goodies. I love the entire process!!
As she asking different questions, she stopped me in my tracks and said "Ive got it, the common thread to your entire business revolves around LOVE". I was like, huh?
She further explained that everything I had just blabbered about to her in the last hour had a common thread... LOVE!
my wedding clients are in LOVE
my family clients LOVE being together and value capturing those special moments
my business clients LOVE their craft so much they started a business to share their passion with the world
The conversation with Kaye that morning has never left my mind in all these years. "Love Your Story" has become a tagline and a phrase I use often when referring to our films and photography and an overarching theme in all that we do.
From that moment on, everything I do in my business, whatever its marketing or product packaging or even sending an email, I think back to what she told me and that the common thread is love.
And since all of our films story based (meaning we aren't just showing up and hitting record and throwing all of your footage on a timeline) EVERYTHING we do is centered around getting to know our clients, their love story, their connection with their children, their passion for their craft....and their WHY behind it all.
By digging deep and learning this information before we even show up to film, and LONG before we bring the footage into out editing bay, we get the heart of the story...
And its all about LOVE baby!
Last year I sent out cute little cards and some sweet treats to some of my more recent clients.
In almost every package I mail out, clients receive popcorn...get it, theres a film inside...you are watching your very own movie!

Oahu, Hawaii Family Videographer | Holiday Video Card for Alex
How do you make a US Marine cry you ask?
You send him a surprise holiday video card from his beautiful wife and one year old daughter while he is deployed overseas for the holidays.
We filmed the sweetest family a few weeks ago as part of our Holiday Video Card Giveaway. I had never met Ashley and her daughter Maci and her mother in law Michelle before I arrived at their home, but before I left that afternoon, we had laughed and cried and shared our life stories and I felt like we had known one another for years.
Ashley's husband Alex is a United States Marine and is deployed overseas for the holidays. Ashley entered our giveaway and won this video.
Out of all the entires for the giveaway, Ashley's story stood out from the rest. I was once a young mother with a baby girl in a town far away from my family while my husband was deployed overseas, so her story tugged at my heart when I read it. The Bowman's were recently stationed in Hawaii and like most of us military families here, she doesn't have family here so she was planning to be extremely homesick for the holidays, alone with her daughter and without her husband. That was until her mother in law Michelle showed up in Hawaii a few days before Alex deployed with a plane ticket home for her and Maci to go home with her to visit family and friends. It wont replace her husband being gone, but I know it sure will help.
Hopefully this short film made Alex feel a tiny bit closer to his beautiful family.
She shared it with Alex and said he has watched it every day since and that it just might have made this big tough marine cry (which is my ultimate goal in life LOL).

Oahu, Hawaii Photographer | Hawaii Military Spouse Photographers Holiday Party 2016
Approximately three years ago, serendipity brought us four crazy kids together, and as luck would have it, we totally jive and make a great team of admins for the Hawaii Military Spouse Photography group. One of our favorite events to plan each year is the Annual Holiday Party. This was our third annual holiday party with all four of us as admins, so together with Kat of Kat Parker Photography, Sharleen of Sharleen Mey Photography and Chelsea of Chelsea Little Photography, we pulled off another amazing party!
I cant event begin to tell you how much I love the ladies of HMSP. We collaborate together, learn from one another, refer business to one another, have quarterly styled shootouts, monthly coffee meetups and so much more. Being a military spouse has its challenges, and we bond over much more than our love for photography. We have become such a tight knit group that we consider one another family and I don't know where I would be without these awesome girls.
Over 30 ladies attended the party and we had such an amazing time. We laughed so hard our cheeks hurt, played silly games, had a white elephant gift exchange, a raffle, and best of all enjoyed each others company.
We had the most amazing swag bags a photographer could ask for, and a ton of door prizes and giveaways from the following generous vendors:
Because of the amazing swag we received from our generous vendors, we held a raffle for some of the donations and were able to raise $450 for a local charity called Hoʻōla Nā Pua, which is a Hawaii-based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide underage female victims of sex trafficking with a pu’uhonua (a safe place) where they can begin to heal from their physical, spiritual, and emotional abuse. What an honor it was to hand over the money we raised knowing it was going to such a great local cause.
Thanks to all the ladies who attended, and the amazing sponsors that donated such fabulous door prizes for raffles and giveaways.
We can not thank our sponsors and members enough for their generosity!!
As is tradition, we had a sparkly backdrop for some silly group photos. Photos courtesy of Chelsea Little Photography

Oahu, Hawaii Photographer and Videographer | Girl Behind the Camera Series - Always an Hour Early
If you have known me for any length of time or have made an appointment with me, you know I am a very punctual person. I would rather be an hour early than a minute late. I pride myself in always being punctual and find it extremely rude if I have an appointment with somebody and they arrive late. To me, if somebody arrives late, its show they don't respect me and they don't value my time. And let's face it, life is too short to be waiting around on people who don't value you.
There are moments in life when you learn the most valuable lessons in the strangest of ways. I don't remember much about middle school but I have vivid memories of my band teacher who was a brilliant musician but quite possibly the meanest person I had ever met.
He trained me to become a first chair flutist, but he also taught me two valuable lessons.
One was to always use a pencil because you need to continually revise and tweak your craft to improve and be the best you can be.
And the other was to always be punctual. I learned quickly that if I wanted to advance as a musician I would have to arrive early to rehearsal. He'd lock us out of band rehearsal if we were late and would throw music stands across the room if we messed up during rehearsal. To this day I can recall the sound of his voice as he would yell at us for arriving late to band and sectional rehearsals and wouldn't let us in. We would have to sit outside in the hallway and listen with agony while the other students practiced.
To this day, I refuse to be late to ANYTHING. I would rather be an hour early than a minute late. I live by William Shakespeare's motto in that its "Better to be three hours too soon than a minute too late".
So the next time we have a meeting together and I arrive an hour early and you see me sitting in the parking lot catching up on emails or reading you will know why. :)
Girl Behind the Camera Series - I Married a Sailor | Hawaii Photographer
On this Veterans Day, I want to thank my sailor, USN Retired, First Class Petty Officer, Gunnersmate, Affron Herring, and all military veterans for serving our country.
“The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.”
—Jeff Miller
If you would have told me I would one day marry a sailor and live this crazy military life, I wouldn't have believed you.
It was almost 20 years ago when I was in Hawaii on a national student exchange program from the University of Minnesota to the University of Hawaii Manoa. Upon arrival, I knew I was in love with the islands (as I had visited once before in 1993 with my friend Tara), but I had no intentions of falling in love at 22 years old with a US Navy sailor.
When I entered the room of a local Honolulu church "singles ministry" in September of 1997, I couldn't help but notice the tall (dude, he's 6'5", you can't miss him!), dark and handsome man who happened to be in charge of the meeting that night. I sat in the back like a scared little puppy, not wanting to be noticed as "the new girl". I'm not sure if it was my midwest vibe (picture overalls, Birkenstock sandals and a thick Minnesota accent) or my short spikey blond hair that got his attention, but a certain somebody made sure I was on his team for the scavenger hunt activity that evening.
At the time, I had no idea he was in the Navy. So it wasn't the uniform that got me (and I am sucker for a man in uniform...I mean, who isn't??), it was his good looks and charm that won me over.
When the semester at UH was over in December, Affron was supposed to drive me to the airport for my flight back to Minnesota, but he was on an emergency duty at sea and wasn't able to bring me. And, this was long before everybody had cell phones so I didn't know he wasn't available to bring me until it was almost too late and I was moments away from missing my flight. I do believe that by us not being able to say goodbye, it made the "distance makes a heart grow fonder" thing real strong and being 5,000 miles apart really made us realize we had fallen in love.
Once back home in Minnesota, as I was sleeping off my jet-lag, my mom said "this man keeps calling the house phone and wondering if you are ok". Turns out "this man" would come visit me in February of 1998, would give me a ring and would marry me a few months later in August 1998, just a few days before he would be deployed to Afghanistan for six months.
When he returned from our first deployment as a married couple, he was required to do recruiting duty, and as luck would have it, Minneapolis/St. Paul was one of the location choices. So we lived in the Twin Cities where I was able to finish my college degree and he was a navy recruiter from 1999-2002.
Our daughter Raina was born in Minnesota in June of 2002 and one month later the Navy moved us to San Diego where Affron was stationed at Coronado. Unfortunately for us, he was then sent on a 10 month deployment and missed the entire first year of Raina's life.
As the ship pulled back into Coronado in September of 2003, he had a retirement ceremony on the ship, at the age of 37 with 20 years of service.
The Navy then moved us one last time back to Hawaii where we have lived every since.
This military life has been a crazy one, but one that I am so thankful for all the things it has given us. Now as a retired veteran, Affron is able to receive wonderful benefits from the Veterans Association, nearly free medical care for our family, access to reduced rates at military stores and the commissary and many other things.

Girl Behind the Camera Series - The Bun | Oahu, Hawaii Photographer
"The I woke Up Like This Bun". This is the I-woke-up-late-put-my-wet-hair-up-and-haven't-had-time-to-re-do-it-all-day-bun.
If you've run into me around town or have met me in person at all, you have most definitely seen me rock the messy bun. Its kind of my signature look. There is absolutely an art form to it...sometimes it looks like a cinnamon bun on top of my head, and other times it looks like the Leaning Tower of Pizza. Either way, with super long hair and living in a warm client 365, its kind of the thing to do.
There are only a few occasions in which you will find me with my hair down...if I am traveling to a cold climate where my hair acts as insulator or during our annual family portraits.
So yeah, that headshot you see on the "about" page, while that braid was on-point, I think its time to get a new headshot, one where I am rocking the bun so you will be able to recognize me when we meet for coffee.
Why have long hair if you just wear it in a bun every day you ask? Great question...I guess as I get older and my body doesn't look like it used to when I was in my 20's, my long hair is the one thing that makes me feel youthful and pretty. I suppose I have adopted the whole adage, if you got it, flaunt it. Well, until I am too old to rock the long hair (please somebody pretty please tell me if I reach this crucial time and don't realize it) I am just going to "rock the bun".
We take the bun-thing pretty serious around here...each has a name...theres the "on-fleek", the "messy", the "I woke up like this", the" high bun". With a teenager in the house, I often use these non-GenX terms such as "on fleek". This of course if horribly embarrassing for said teenager, but whatevs...I think I am tots adorbs....haha...see what I did there?
"The On-Fleak Bun". When you whip it up real quick and its just pa-pow....pure-bun-awesomeness.
"The High Bun". An all-time high, this one wins the prize for height.
